Day 17 Kingman to 29 Palms California

Sunrise was at 5:21 am and we were on the road at 5:19 am this morning to try to get most of our riding in before it got too hot. I especially am not enjoying this heat. We have over 300 miles of desert to get through. We will do it in 2 days because we are doing a side trip to Joshua Tree National Park.

After leaving Kingman,  Rt 66 takes the Oatman Highway which is a winding road with hairpin turns and scenic views. It is in the Black Mountains and their are many signs alerting motorcyclists to be alert and no vehicle over 40 foot is permitted. But honestly I agree with Wade that I wouldn’t want to drive anything much bigger than our motorcycles on it. There are very little guard rails and no leeway for errors. We encountered cattle in the road, lots of rabbits and wild Burros. The road is 48 miles long and the speed limit varies between 20 and 30 mph.

Oatman AZ is a cute little town with wild burro’s wandering the town.

We arrive in California.

The town of Amboy really only has a combination gas pump, diner, souvenir and gift shop.

We arrived in Twenty Nine Palms at 11 am. We booked a hotel, had lunch and headed to Joshua Tree National Park. It was sooooo hot in town (104 degrees) but cooler in the park at 92 degrees. The park includes parts of two deserts- the higher Mohave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert.  The park is named for the tree that is in the Mohave Desert. The dominant feature in the park are these cool bare rock formations and the Joshua trees.
